The Front Nine

Out in 35. Yardages shown from the championship Blue tees.

The OpenerPar 4

A good opening hole — a straightforward par-4 opportunity to get loose. It measures 367 yards with a single fairway bunker on the left that requires a drive of 250 to clear it. The green has a false front and sits slightly elevated, which keeps short wedges from bouncing on, and is bunkered left and right.

Gear ChangePar 5

Get ready here for a major gear change. This challenging par 5 first curves right around a long, narrow pond, then moves back left as a second pond guards the fairway's landing area all the way to the green — and yes, OB runs the entire left side. The huge green hides an elephant buried in the middle, kicking wedges away from center toward back hole locations.

The TightropePar 4

Played from a tee high above the second green, this tight driver measures 381 yards with trees left and a fairway that slopes right, making the blind tee shot hard to hold. The downhill approach must carry to a green that wraps a bunker left and slopes toward a pond — a lot of backspin is required to hold it, especially with the flag left.

Blind Par 3Par 3

Another blind tee shot, this time a 140-yard uphill par 3. The large putting surface isn't visible from the tee and is guarded by big bunkers on both sides. Club selection is the key here.

Risk & RewardPar 4

A dogleg-right par 4 of only 329 yards from an elevated tee, with bunkers outside the elbow and water and tall willows right to punish anyone cutting the corner too greedily. If you love risk and reward, you'll love this hole; the second shot is to a large green nestled against the pond.

StraightawayPar 4

A straightaway par 4 at 365 yards from an elevated tee that gets tight in the landing area. Two ponds are in play off the tee, with a 70-foot poplar guarding the right side of the fairway. The elevated green is bunkered left and right with a strong left break that's difficult to detect.

Uphill BattlePar 4

This uphill 403-yard par 4 plays like 440, with a water carry off the tee. The fairway feeds right into rough while treacherous OB sits close left. The green is elevated, deep and heavily bunkered on both sides.

All CarryPar 3

Waiting for a breather hole? Keep waiting. No. 8 is an all-carry tee ball over a swale-fronted par 3 that plays a club longer than you think. A huge crater-like bunker guards the front above a steep drop-off, with OB close on the left and a very tall poplar in wait.

The ElbowPar 4

A dogleg-right par 4 with fairway bunkers on both sides of the elbow. Carry the right bunker and a short iron remains to the elevated green; miss the short grass and small trees lurk in the rough. The putting surface is deep, narrow and tightly bunkered. Over the green is dead. After you putt out on nine, don't miss the outdoor grill off the 10th tee.

The Back Nine

Home in 36 — through our version of Amen Corner and a genuine closing test.

10Hcp 5

Amen Corner BeginsPar 4

The start of Hilldale's Amen Corner — a downhill dogleg right with trees guarding the right and OB left. The approach is played over water to an elevated, two-level green. Land on the upper level with the flag below and you're in trouble.

The Long WalkPar 5

A slight dogleg-right par 5 from an elevated tee tucked into the woods, playing a shoelace-snapping 602 yards. Trees crowd the chute left and right; the third shot is a toughie over a creek to an extremely shallow, flat green bunkered both sides, with OB behind.

DeceiverPar 4

A deceptively short sharp dogleg right that demands a 230-yard drive to carry the creek crossing the fairway. Aim left and it's easy to run through into tree trouble. Trees and bunkers guard the green.

Unlucky 13Par 3

Unlucky for some — a killer par 3 that from the tips plays 191 yards, all carry. Depending on the tee, the large pond sits either along the right side or directly in front of you. The green is generous front-left to back-right, guarded by a series of four cluster bunkers along the back.

Seen From I-90Par 5

This long, straight hole can be seen from I-90. A 524-yard par 5, very tight with just enough trees in the right spots. Your second must get safely past a tiny but menacing pond on the left. The slightly elevated green is wide and shallow, and its front rejects roll-ups.

Iron PlayPar 4

Only 311 yards, so smart players hit iron off the tee. It's downhill but very narrow with trees both sides, and a very deep sand crater blocks the front of the green and stops any roll-up.

Creek CrossingPar 3

A par 3 with trees and a creek down the right and bunkers on both sides. There's OB left, and it's far more in play than it looks.

The TestPar 4

A downhill dogleg-right par 4 and a very difficult driving hole, with lateral hazards both sides. Water guards the front of the green and wraps around to the left. The shallow, grainy green forces putts to the front.

HomePar 4

A beautiful finishing hole at 346 yards. Water fronts the elevated tee and the fairway looks narrow, framed by big oaks and the clubhouse left and more trees right. The green is elevated and tightly bunkered.
